The 2018 PSH Illustrated NFL Mock Draft

The 2018 PSH Illustrated NFL Mock Draft

It's that time of the year again. An endless amount of mock-drafts flying through the internet and T.V. to come and slap you in the face to keep football fans excited year round. So I decided to join in on the fun and create a mock draft of my own. Here goes.

1. Cleveland Browns:

girls lacrosseAsset 3.png

Cleveland fans finally get what they've been looking for for the past 20 years; Sam Darnold is the future franchise QB for Cleveland. With Cleveland acquiring Tyrod Taylor recently in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland has their "stop-gap" QB for Darnold to sit behind for a year or two. Darnold has everything a franchise wants in a QB, and at 6'3" 221 lbs, he has the size teams want and with a 40 time of 4.85 he can run too. He can throw from inside the pocket goes through his progressions and has the athletic ability to run. But what makes him really special is his ability to escape pressure and throw from outside the pocket. Darnold's highlights are riddled with miracle plays of him escaping the pocket, buying time, and launching the ball downfield to a receiver that has squeezed open from him buying time. What his tape also shows is that as a sophomore, he threw for 4,143 yards and 26 touchdowns to make the Trojans Conference champs. The only thing he is knocked for though are his turnovers (13 interceptions and 11 fumbles) which will need to come down as he transitions to the NFL. He is the franchise guy that Cleveland will build around for the next decade. Cleveland finally makes their big move to become competitive. The wait is over Dog Pound.

2. New York Giants:

girls lacrosseAsset 4.png

It's clear that last year the Giants had problems on the offensive line. During free agency the Giants clearly knew that they wanted to fix that problem by signing former New England left tackle Nate Solder. They will also go into the draft with that philosophy and pickup the overall best player in the draft and shore up the left side of their offensive line to protect Eli Manning. Quenton Nelson is a 6'5", 325 lbs lineman that dominated college football and showed all of the traits to be a pro-bowl NFL offensive guard. At the combine he also showcased his strength and athleticism by posting 35 reps on the bench press and a 4.62 second 20 yard shuttle. Nelson has been labeled by most scouts and analysts as the safest pick in the draft, and the Giants take advantage of their opportunity and plan to win now.

3. New York Jets (via Indianapolis Colts):

girls lacrosseAsset 5.png

Because the Jets moved up from pick 6 to pick 3 its very obvious to everyone that they have a specific Quarterback in mind. And the perfect fit for that franchise is the Quarterback out of Oklahoma with a big personality. Mayfield is the Heisman winner and former two time walk on, both at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, and is coming off of a season where he lit up college football. Baker is an interesting prospect because he is so polarizing due to his immense talent, but also has plenty of "off the field" issues as well. At 6'1" 215 lbs, he is a little undersized for an NFL QB, but way more than makes up for it in leadership ability and passion for the game. Not to mention he also completed 70 percent of his passes and threw for 4,627 yards and a whopping 46 touchdowns. The Jets need to find a franchise Quarterback and Mayfield certainly has the talent to become one.

4. Cleveland Browns (via Texans):

girls lacrosseAsset 6.png

It's no surprise to anyone that there's another elite defensive prospect out of Alabama getting picked in the first round again. Just like Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix and Landon Collins before him, Minkah Fitzpatrick had a dominant and versatile tenure with Alabama racking up 171 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and 9 interceptions over 3 years with the Tide. The Cleveland Browns need someone to lead a young defensive backfield and be a versatile "center-fielder" with elite speed and size. The only knock on Fitzpatrick is that no one is sure what position he will play in the NFL. He looks the part of a slot corner or a free-safety, but many think he has the talent to play outside even though he hardly played their during his career at Alabama. The Browns are looking to acquire as much talent as possible after getting their QB at pick 1, and Fitzpatrick is one of the best and most unique athletes in the draft.

5. Denver Broncos:

girls lacrosseAsset 7.png

Even though the Broncos just signed Case Keenum to a sizable deal to be the starting QB, John Elway is desperate to find a long-term QB to bring this team back to the Superbowl. Luckily for the Broncos the best "pure-passer" in the draft is sitting at number 5 for them to draft. While many scouts and GM's are tepid about Rosen's dedication to football its hard to look past the talent he has throwing the football. At 6'4" 226 lbs, he is the prototypical pocket passing QB that every scout looks for. And while he's not very athletic, he more than makes up for it in his natural throwing motion and navigating the pocket. In his final year at UCLA he threw for 3,756 yards and 26 touchdowns. Most scouts and analyst's will tell you that he is the most polished and game ready QB to come out in this years draft. The former high school tennis star has excellent footwork and pinpoint accuracy, along with quick and smart decision making from the pocket. Rosen is a very smart player on and off the field allowing him to learn any playbook or system he is thrown into. While some scouts and general managers think his intelligence makes him "overly cocky", I think it is a good trait for a QB to have coming into a business where every player thinks they're the best. Besides, the last high profile QB prospect they said that about was Aaron Rodgers, and just look how he turned out.

6. Indianapolis Colts (via New York Jets):

girls lacrosseAsset 8.png

The Colts had one of the worst pass rushes in the league last year and desperately need to upgrade at the position. At 6'4" 269 lbs, Chubb defiantly looks the part of an elite DE in the NFL. What makes him special and separates him from the rest of the group though are his impressive stats, and last year recorded 26 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. What I like about him the most though, is how relentless and effortless he makes rushing the passer and setting the edge look. He showed how athletic he was at the combine by posting impressive times in the advanced drills. Chubb finished the 3 cone drill in 7.37 seconds showing off his quickness around corners and ability to change direction, but also finished the 20 yard shuttle in 4.41 seconds showing off elite quickness for his size. The Colts need a bell-cow on the defensive side of the football that can get after the Quarterback every play, and Chubb seems to be the guy in this draft that can impact every play.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

girls lacrosseAsset 9.png

It's funny that maybe five years ago everyone was talking about how it was dumb to take a running back in the top of the first round because they were "not valuable enough". Well the mold has shifted again and RB's are back on the first round menu, and Barkley is quite the prospect. At 6'0" 233 lbs and a 4.40 40 yard dash, Barkley's final coming out party at the combine before the draft really caught everyone's attention. During his final season at Penn State he rushed for 1,856 yards and 31 TD's as he started to shoot up draft boards across the country. Not only does Barkley have elite speed for someone his size, he also posses a lot of strength and explosion to go along with his bulky frame. At the combine he had a 41.0 inch vertical jump and took 29 reps on the bench press. His combination of speed and power is very rare and has the production to back it up. Multiple teams would give up a lot of value to acquire a talent like Barkley, and the Buccaneers would be stupid to let him slip through their hands here at the seventh pick.

8. Chicago Bears:

girls lacrosseAsset 10.png

The Bears are still in rebuild mode after getting what many think to be their franchise QB in last years draft. This year however, they are looking to find the game changing leader on the other side of the football. Tremaine Edmunds is an extremely talented athlete who has the size, strength, and speed to really catch the attention of NFL teams. At 6'5", 253 lbs, and 34 1/2 inch arms, Edmunds has the size to be a long and rangy middle linebacker or an elite edge defender who can overpower offensive tackles on the next level. The thing that makes him a top 10 pick though, are the numbers he put up at Virginia Tech. As a Junior, he posted a team-high 109 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. Edmunds is exactly the type of hybrid "jack of all trades" player that the Bears need.

9. San Francisco 49er's:

girls lacrosseAsset 11.png

With many of the holes filled on this team through free-agency and the draft, the 49er's have a rare opportunity to draft the best player available in Derwin James. James is another highly anticipated Defensive back coming out of Florida State; a school that has a history of great DB's (exp. Deion Sanders). James is 6'3" 215 lbs, with a 4.47 40 time, a 40 inch vertical, and a 132 inch broad jump making him one of the most gifted athletes in this draft. In his Junior year at Florida State he racked up 84 total tackles and 2 interceptions in 12 games. What James has in natural athletic ability, he also has in leadership ability. Even though his natural position is safety, he also lined up at slot-corner and linebacker at Florida State, and I suspect that the 49er's will use him in the same way to show off his play-making ability. He will join a defensive backfield that just acquired All-pro cornerback Richard Sherman and will be able to grow and learn from one of this generations great players. The 49ers will now have their answer for the many different types of versatile running backs and tight ends that they will face in the NFC.

10. Oakland Raiders:

girls lacrosseAsset 12.png

The Oakland Raiders are desperate to find a speedy corner who can be the captain of their defense and lock up the other teams number one Wide out . Ward has legit speed at a 4.32 seconds, and while undersized for most teams at 5'10" 191 lbs, Ward often plays bigger than he really is. Denzel Ward is an excellent man-coverage corner who can blanket receivers and also showed some really great flashes in zone coverage allowing him to be a a guy who will fit with any scheme early on. Jon Gruden really needs to get his first pick right if he wants to have a successful tenure as the Raiders new Head Coach, and to use his own term Ward is the "Gruden Grinder" he'll be looking for at pick 10. Ward has the ability to come in on day 1 and be the best cornerback for the Oakland Raiders.

11. Miami Dolphins: Roquan Smith

Linebacker: Georgia

Roquan Smith is the NFL's modern prototypical linebacker. He has the size at 6'1" 236 and the speed, he ran a 4.51 40 yard dash, to keep up with modern NFL running backs, slot receivers, and tight ends. Smith has sideline to sideline speed along with a knack as a middle linebacker to rush the passer when his number is called. The Dolphins would pair him up with Kiko Alonso in the middle and they would be one of the best duos in the league. not only are his measurable impressive, but he also has the tape to match it, with 137 total tackles and 6.5 sacks last year en route to the college football championship game. The Dolphins need to improve their speed on defense, especially in the middle of the field in order to keep up with the quick running backs and receivers the New England Patriots have. Roquan starts day 1 for them and makes an immediate impact and could be in the running for defensive rookie of the year.

12. Buffalo Bills (via Cincinnati Bengals ): Josh Allen

Quarterback; Wyoming

The Buffalo Bills have moved up all the way from 21 to 12 in order to grab their quarterback of the future, despite signing the highly coveted AJ McCarron in the off season. The Buffalo Bills had a successful season in where they ended a 20 year playoff drought, but lost in the wildcard round to the Jaguars. With the Bills having a young dominate defense they plan to take advantage of their opportunity now, and plan to be aggressive in this years draft and go get their guy Josh Allen from Wyoming. Allen is considered by many scouts to have the "highest ceiling" among the Quarterback prospects in this draft because of his size at 6'5", 237 lbs and his incredibly strong arm. While most scouts agree that he is highly talented and is a great prospect, he also is a work in progress with a rough skill set and will need to sit for a couple of years. The Bills are willing to take on that project and allow him to sit behind McCarron and learn the game.

13. Washington Redskins: Josh Jackson

Cornerback: Iowa

The Redskins have to retool their backfield a bit after trading Kendall Fuller to the Chiefs for Alex Smith and Jackson is one of the best playmakers in the draft. He allowed the lowest passer rating among all corners in college football last year (per PFF) with a rating of 36.5 when targeted 91 times, and also had 8 interceptions. He had only one year at corner, but his potential is sky high and his skill has already exceeded expectations. He will have plenty to absorb from his teammate and probowl corner Josh Norman because of his inexperience, but can play slot or outside depending on what the Redskins want to do with him. Before the combine many questions were raised about his long speed, but posted a decent 40 time of 4.56 which is plenty of speed for the NFL. But even with the questions concerning speed, its impossible to look past the tape and other measurables. At 6'1" 192 lbs, he has ideal size for the position and had 18 pass break-ups last season. The Redskins will take another step forward in making their defense elite with pick 13.

14. Green Bay Packers: Harold Landry

Edge Defender: Boston College

The Packers last season had their worst season in a decade with the loss of Aaron Rodgers early in the season. They struggled on both sides of the football, but it was clear that the Packers biggest issue was a pass-rush off the edge. Landry is an athletic and natural pass-rusher from Boston College who had an outstanding Junior season in where he recorded 16.5 sacks. To the surprise of many, Landry decided to return for his senior year to earn a degree and also work on his craft. During his senior season, Landry was off to what looked like another great season in where he had 5 sacks in 6 games, but injured his ankle and was sidelined for the rest of the year, which resulted in his draft stock plummeting from a potential top 5 pick to a borderline top 20 pick. At the combine Landry put up impressive numbers at 6'3", 253 he had a 4.65 40 time, 24 bench press reps, a 6.88 second 3 cone drill, and a 4.19 second three cone drill finishing in the top 5 for every drill. Landry was able to back-up his monster junior season with great combine numbers showing off his agility and strength cementing himself as a pro-ready pass rusher.

15. Arizona Cardinals: Lamar Jackson

Quarterback; Louisville

Cardinals are looking to re-tool their team after Carson Palmer retired along with head coach Bruce Arians, and the new front office is looking for a different kind of team. Lamar Jackson another former Heisman trophy winner gives the Cardinals exactly what they're looking for. Jacksons athletic ability is second to none among Quarterbacks, and has gotten praise from former Quarterback Michael Vick saying that Lamar is a copy of himself and maybe even better than he was. The Cardinals will form an offense around Jackson that plays to his athletic ability while also molding him into a more polished passer as he sits behind the newly signed Sam Bradford. While Jackson did not run at the combine he did throw and was able to showcase his footwork and arm strength. While Jackson was at Louisville he put up monster numbers, and during his sophomore season he had 51 combined touchdowns (30 passing, 21 rushing) and won the Heisman Trophy. Jackson will give the Cardinals a more dynamic offense paired up with David Johnson and will allow the Cardinals to have something on offense no other team has.

16. Baltimore Ravens: Mike McGlinchey

Offensive Tackle; Notre Dame

The Ravens struggled on the offensive side of the football this past season, whether it was running the football or in the passing game. It was painfully obvious that the Ravens Biggest issue was at the offensive line, and luckily for them they get one of the best prospects here at pick 16. McGlinchey, is the other half of a dominant left side of the the offensive line for Notre Dame and is the best run blocker in college football. At 6'8" 309 lbs with 34 inch arms McGlinchey is a mountain of a prospect, but has the quick feet and hands to excel at the pro level. McGlinchey can start right away at either tackle or guard to hone his skills against the talent of the NFL.

17. Los Angeles Chargers: Vita Vea

Interior Defender; Washington

The Chargers are a team that has loads of talent on both sides of the football and are extremely close to making the playoffs. They have two elite edge defenders and a young and fast secondary to go with a dynamic offense, so they have the luxury to pick the best player available who also fits a need in Vita Vea. Vea was extremely dominate in college and was one of the main reasons why the Huskies had an elite defense. At 6'4", 347 lbs Vea was often double teamed or triple teamed on most plays which was often unsuccessful for opposing teams. Vea might also be the strongest player in the draft and showcased that during the combine with 41 bench press reps. While the only other drill he participated in was the 40 yard dash, where he posted a 5.10 second time, the real show of his talent is on his tape. this pick would immediately make the Chargers a better football team and would help their immediate weakens in the middle of the D-Line.

18. Seattle Seahawks: Will Hernandez

Offensive Guard; UTEP

The Seahawks are in full rebuild mode and need to start with the offensive line. Hernandez went into the combine graded as a second round pick, but showed out at the combine and brought more attention to himself and has increased his stock. Hernandez is known as a run-blocking "punch you in your mouth" guard who has incredible strength and feet to be just that. Where Hernandez really showed out was at the senior bowl where he dominated the competition. While he lacks "ideal" size for the position, he has enough strength and skill to be able to start day one for the Seahawks.

19. Dallas Cowboys: Calvin Ridley

Wide Receiver; Alabama

The Cowboys desperately need to re-tool their Wide Receiver corps, because last year showed that even in single coverage they struggled to get open. With Dez on the hot seat after another disappointing season, the Cowboys have a tough decision to make on whether to cut Dez and plan for the future, or go all in on Dez and hope turns his career around. In this situation I have the Cowboys planning for the future and taking advantage of an opportunity that they might not have again, and that is being able to draft the clear-cut best Wide Receiver in the draft. Calvin Ridley is a 6'0" 189 lbs wide out with elite deep speed and rare route running ability for a college player. I like Ridley here because even if the Jets don't land Kirk Cousins they still get one of the few "cant miss" prospects in the draft to help out a young Dak Prescott who had down year compared to his rookie year. Ridley in his Junior season had 63 catches for 967 yards and 5 touchdowns, and while his numbers don't jump off the page they don't show the full story. At the combine Ridley ran a 4.43 and showed off his catching and route running skills during the drills. Ridley is a far cry from what Dez was as a prospect. Ridley will come in day one and be the clear number one guy for Dak Prescott to throw to.

20. Detroit Lions: Maurice Hurst

Defensive Tackle; Michigan

Hurst is a extremely interesting prospect that has lots of questions marks around his name. Most of those questions marks are about his health and are out of his control. Unfortunately for him, that will cause his draft stock to plummet from a potential top 10 pick to a borderline first round pick. The thing that made Hurst a potential top 10 pick though, is his extensive resume at the University of Michigan where he recorded 34 stops, 11.5 for a loss, and 4.5 sacks as a junior. The Lions are a team that many believe are on the cusp of becoming a great team, but have a few roster holes that need to be filled and one of those being a Defensive Tackle to help against the run. Although Hurst is slightly undersized for the position, he has the ability and technique to shed from blocks and keep himself square against bigger blockers so he doesn't get overpowered. He also posses the ability to rush the passer and disrupt the backfield which is relatively uncommon for defensive tackles. with Ezikiel Ansa getting most of the attention on the D-Line, Hurst will have more opportunity to make a big impact on the Lions defense.

21. Cincinnati Bengals (via Buffalo Bills): Conner Willliams

Offensive Tackle; Texas

The Bengals traded down from pick 12 because they knew that they could get just as valuable of a player at 21 and be able to acquire more draft capital. Luckily for them, the draft pans out exactly how they wanted it to and are able to snag one of the top 2 Offensive Tackles coming out of this years draft. Many scouts will argue that McGlinchey and Williams are a toss up for the ranking of the drafts number 1 tackle, and because this draft is so loaded with skill position talent he falls out of the top 20. While Williams is not the mountain of a prospect that McGlinchey is, he is still the ideal size and weight that teams look for in an elite NFL tackle. He also had an impressive combine that solidified himself as a top prospect deserving of a first round grade. The Bengals have struck out at the tackle position for the past couple of years and really need to land a solid prospect here at 21.

22. Buffalo Bills (via Kansas City Chiefs ): Kolton Miller

Offensive Tackle; UCLA

The Bills traded away their starting left tackle in order to move up in the draft to get their QB of the future in Josh Allen. With them shipping their Left Tackle out of town, they have to address that hole in the draft. Miller has excellent size and balance for the an Offensive Tackle and probably has the best footwork of all of the prospects in the draft, however there are often times on his film where he is beat by bull-rushing DE's which has caused his stock to drop. If he wants to be a successful Tackle in the NFL he will need to add muscle so he can compete with stronger NFL defenders.

23. New England Patriots (via Los Angeles Rams): Rashaan Evans

Linebacker; Alabama

The Patriots desperately need speed on their defense, especially on the front seven. Rashaan Evans is the prototypical modern linebacker that most teams are looking for. He has the sideline to sideline speed along with a "thumpers" mentality and a knack for finding the ball in tight spaces. along with all of the physical trait he posses, he has a high football IQ and is able to diagnose a play before and after the snap. He had a slow start to the year but finished very strong for the championship winning Crimson Tide, and will translate nicely to the NFL especially playing for a coach like Belichick.

24. Carolina Panthers: Derrius Guice

Running back; LSU

With the departure of Jonathan Stewart from the backfield in Carolina, the Panthers are lacking a real thumper that they can hand the ball to in short yardage situations. Although Guice has some injury concerns, while he was on the field he had spectacular production and showed flashes of "beast-mode" like running. As a true freshman he filled in for an unavailable Leonard Fournette and averaged 8.5 yards and three scores. Last year, while missing part of the season with a left leg injury, he was still able to produce a 1,000 yard season and 11 scores for the Tigers. This will be the Panthers second year taking a Running Back in the first round, but now they will have a deadly combo of young running backs that Cam can rely on.

25. Tennessee Titans: Marcus Davenport

Edge Defender; UTSA

The Titans lacked an outside edge presence last year and as a result their defense suffered. They need a big, strong, athletic edge player to come in day one and make an impact, and I believe Davenport is that guy. At 6'6", 264 lbs with an incredible wingspan, Davenport has all of the physical tools necessary to be a freakish athlete who can dominate the NFL. However, he is a rough and underdeveloped prospect who doesn't have many rushing techniques that are needed to excel on the pro level. He often relies too much on his bull rush and is often taken out of plays because he gets too preoccupied with his rush. If Davenport gets the right coaching and develops some more pass rushing moves, he could become the steal of this draft.

26. Atlanta Falcons: Taven Bryan

Defensive Tackle; Florida

27. New Orleans Saints: Hayden Hurst

 Tight End; South Carolina

28. Pittsburgh Steelers: Leighton Vander-Esch

Linebacker; Boise State

29. Jacksonville Jaguars: Cortland Sutton

Wide Receiver; SMU

30. Minnesota Vikings: Isaih Wynn

Offensive Guard; Georgia

31. New England Patriots: Orlando Brown

 Offensive Tackle; Oklahoma

32. Philadelphia Eagles: Mike Gesicki

Tight End; Penn State
